Helly Hansen is a renowned Norwegian brand with a rich history dating back to 1877. It was founded by Captain Helly Juell Hansen, who, together with his wife, began making waterproof clothing for sailors and workers in the North Sea. Their first products were jackets, trousers and oilskin sails made from linen soaked in linseed oil.
Over the years, Helly Hansen has been at the forefront of developing innovative materials that enhance the durability and functionality of its equipment. In the 1940s, it introduced Helox, a thin sheet of translucent PVC plastic sewn into waterproof jackets that became a staple of outdoor protection. This was followed by the development of Fibrepile, a cold-weather insulation layer, and in the 1970s LIFA, a base layer of fabric that keeps skin dry and warm by wicking moisture away from the body.
Today, Helly Hansen is a subsidiary of the Canadian Tire retail chain and is known for its high-quality outdoor clothing and sports equipment.
