The Champion brand was founded in 1919 by the Feinbloom brothers of Rochester as the Knickerbocker Knitting Company. From the beginning, the brand specialized in sweatshirts and sweatpants. Originally, they only made jerseys. The first athletes to wear Champion were from Michigan State University. In the 1930s, Champion also supplied sportswear to college sports teams. In 1934, Champion patented the "Reverse Weave" method, which minimizes wrinkling when washing sportswear. Champion supplies sportswear to NBA and NFL players, and is also the official jersey manufacturer of the U.S. basketball team.
